Locksmith fraud on the rise
The Better Business Bureau is warning consumers to beware of untrustworthy locksmith companies that are ripping off consumers across the country.
Victim complaints to the BBB reveal that several locksmith companies, all using similar methods, are significantly overcharging consumers, charging consumers for unnecessary services, using intimidation tactics, and failing to give refunds or respond to consumer complaints.
Complaints about locksmith services to the 114 BBBs serving the U.S. increased almost 75 percent from 2005 to 2006, and have continued to come in steadily during the first half of this year.
The BBB has identified Dependable Locksmith -- which operates under more than a dozen different names -- as a particularly disreputable locksmith. This company poses as a local locksmith in cities across the country and advertises in the yellow pages using local phone numbers and fake local addresses. A consumer might think they're dealing with a local locksmith but their phone call is actually connected to a call center located in New York City.
Consumers are quoted a reasonable price over the phone but when the locksmith arrives -- typically in an unmarked vehicle -- he demands significantly more money than originally quoted, often only accepting cash.
Dependable Locksmiths has an unsatisfactory record with the BBB, due to a pattern of unanswered complaints. The company's aliases include, Superb Solutions, Locksmith 24 Hour, Inc., USA Total Security, Priceline Locksmith, and S.O.S. Locksmith.
The BBB suggests, before you find yourself in the unfortunate position of being locked out of your car or house, do your research and find a truly dependable locksmith in your area. Ask around and always check with the BBB first to find reputable businesses.
If you feel you've been taken advantage of by a company, contact the BBB to file a complaint.

Old foundry building ablaze
Benton County officials report that the old Foundry building (Magpro) on Overhead Bridge Road is
engulfed in flames after an explosion. There are at least three different fire departments along with
emergency medical and rescue squad technicians. Police have evacuated residents in the
area. Traffic is now being re-routed in the area. Overhead Bridge Road and Highway 70 between Highway 641 and bypass have been closed.
Some authorities have said that this is a toxic fire because of the magnesium and residents anywhere in the area should
leave immediately. However, Benton County Sherrif Tony King said that he was told that the fire is not toxic. A shelter has been set up at First United Methodist Church in Camden.
UPDATES: According to authorities there are no reported injuries and at least 100 residents have
been evacuated, however there are conflicting reports as to the actual number of residents. John Smoot (Benton County Emergency Management)
reported that the fire departments are placing soil on the
fire and that the fire is now dying down. Smoot told Ron Layne at WRJB: "Right now
we're just waiting for the thing to completely burn itself out." However, residents and others are still reporting several explosions.
Television news sources have falsely reported that the entire city of Camden was evacuated. Smoot said that this is not correct.
One channel out of Nashville, TN irresponsibly reported that the explosion was "like a nuclear bomb" and "nuclear blast".
6:55 p.m. Rains are now moving into the area and may cause further explosions. The smoke from the plant is now covering the entire area and the situation may become worse. If residents see smoke in their area they should seek shelter immediately.

Open Letter to the Citizens of Benton County
In an open letter to the citizens of Benton County, Henry Berry of Camden, TN, states that he has "several pounds of documents concerning the allocation of funds by the Benton County Electric System." In Berry's letter he states that during the last "six years Gary L. Stone, General Manager of the Benton County Electric System, has engaged in the practice of deciding his own annual pay raise. He determined the employees' annual raises as well. This is over seven thousand (7,000) counts of wrong doing."
In addition to calling for an investigative audit to take place, Berry is requesting the
District Attorney's Office seek all appropriate indictments.

Citizens for Honest Gov protest on square
Camden, TN - The courthouse square in Camden (Benton County, TN) was the scene of a massive
demonstration opposing the spending of 10 million dollars for a new jail. The Benton
County Commission violated the Sunshine Law by holding an illegal special-called
meeting.
The commission discussed the plans for a new jail that will burden the
taxpayers with over 20 million dollars in new debt when one considers all the ancillary
cost involved.
As the meeting progressed it was obvious the STALE MANTRA continued that the same
old firm and plan was still in play. The citizens of Benton County were not permitted to
address the commission. Absolutely nothing was decided at this meeting. Please
remember to attend the meeting on Monday July 16th when a vote will be taken. [More Pictures]

NOAA develops seafood consumer guide
Seafood consumers in the U.S., increasingly concerned about the sustainability and quality of seafood, can now turn to a NOAA Fisheries Service Web site, FishWatch, for the latest information.
The Web site, at fishwatch.noaa.gov, has information on more than 30 of the most popular seafood species, with more species to be added in the near future. NOAA Fisheries Service is inviting the public to visit the FishWatch Web site and provide feedback on the program through the comments section within the next 60 days.
"Consumers are increasingly concerned about the safety, quality, and sustainability of the seafood they eat," said Bill Hogarth, NOAA Fisheries Service director. "This guide brings accurate fish information available to your seafood market, and it allows consumers to make informed decisions about purchasing seafood."
FishWatch provides seafood consumers with timely information about seafood, such as red snapper. The Web site includes details on population strength and status, as well as consumer information, such as on fat content and vitamins. FishWatch also provides economic information, such as where seafood comes from and how much money it brings to the economy.
Taxpayers forced to pay $5-million for new jail
At the regularly scheduled meeting of the County Commission in Camden TN, for a second time in less than a week the courthouse hosted an over-flowing crowd. The crowd of tax payers listened to several citizens who were able to speak during the open forum. They listened to Pat Carter who proved once and for all that Commissioner Randy Patton has trouble with the truth. It seems that Commissioner Patton and others have made statements to the effect that "we are under contract to TLM Associated, Inc. and we owe them money". According to a legal opinion from the law offices of Smith Cashion and Orr, PLC in Nashville, TN, they stated:
"It is our opinion that Benton County has no further obligation to TLM Associates, Inc....TLM has been paid for its design services. Accordingly, we do not believe that Benton County has further payment obligations to TLM Associates."
One of the participants of the open forum requested information on how much was still owed on the old jail. She was told that $398,000 is still owed.
Sherry Busby asked if anyone ever bothered to look into other forms of bonding.
James Peach stated that 23 percent of the citizens of Benton County were over 55 years of age and that 73 percent of the students in Benton County are on the free lunch program. He concluded that many of the people in Benton County are having to decide between purchasing food or medication so consequently they can not afford additional tax burden.
Another citizen stood up and asked where are the plans for the jail? Also he asked why no attempt is being made to collect taxes that are owed to the County now?
A person who recently moved into Benton County made the observation that the only industry he sees in this county is the dump and the county government. He asked why there can not be a focus made on jobs and not the jail.
Another citizen stated his son was currently serving in Iraq and that his son was aggravated that the commissioners were wanting to spend ten-million dollars on a jail when he himself had to sleep in a tent. He asked why reward the criminal?
After the conclusion of the open forum session an amendment was presented to the 16 out of 18 commissioners who were present in order to reduce the amount to be allocated for the new jail from ten-million to five-million dollars.
When the vote was taken 13 voted yes and 3 voted no. The five-million dollar bond issue for the jail was approved. Because there was over 2/3 who voted yes, the citizens of Benton County will not have the opportunity to express their opinion either way.
In summary the taxpayers are paying five-million dollars for a new jail that does not even have a set of design plans yet. (Submitted)

New study indicates garlic does not lower cholesterol
A report in the San Francisco Chronicle says, "After conducting one of the
most elaborate studies yet on garlic's effect on cardiovascular health, scientists
at the Stanford University School of Medicine said Monday that they could find no
benefit in terms of reduced levels of LDL cholesterol, the "bad" form linked to
heart disease."
Some participants were given fresh garlic six days a week, in the form of an average-size clove, crushed in a blender and served in sandwich condiments. Others got tablets of aged or powdered commercial garlic supplements, given at 1.5 to 3 times the recommended daily dose. Yet another group got cellulose tablets made to resemble the garlic tablets, to test for placebo effects.
The idea was that the garlic would have a clear and statistically significant
impact on blood cholesterol, possibly more pronounced for those downing the raw
garlic in their sandwiches. But among the 169 participants who remained through
the entire study, the researchers found no differences at all that they could tie
to Allium sativum consumption in any form. (Read the full article)

Wheel tax referendum petition campaign
The Benton County Court approved a wheel tax of $35.00 on first reading tonight. This means any motorized vehicle that you own will be subject to the tax(including mobile homes, motor bikes, etc-- I believe??). The resolution must be passed a second time before becoming law. We have already kicked off the campaign to get 700 voting citizens to sign a petition requiring a referendum of the people!
We need 40 people or more to serve as petition coordinators. The aim is to get 700 signatures in seven days. It will take a lot of work, but we will get it done --Lord willing. If you would like to volunteer as a petition coordinator, please call Kathy at 584-9449. Kathy has agreed to head up the petition gathering process. If you would like to volunteer for manning the tents in Camden and Big Sandy on Saturday, we need your help. Again, the goal is 100 signatures per day!
We can do it! Thanks for all the volunteers that came to the Blackberry Patch after
the commission meeting. Great start to a successful effort by the people. [Read More]

BBB issues alert for phishing attack
The Better Business Bureau System warns all businesses and consumers across the United States and Canada (including the Louisville, Southern Indiana, and Western Kentucky area) of a spoofing scam using the BBB name and a false BBB e-mail address to entice recipients to access potentially damaging hyperlinks.
The Louisville area BBB received a call this afternoon from a member business that received one of these emails.
A firm from Kennesaw, GA, had its computer system hacked last night. That firm’s system is now generating thousands of counterfeit messages to businesses and consumers, purporting to be a complaint filed with the BBB. The incident was first reported to the BBB serving Columbus, GA and the surrounding area by one of its members.
The e-mail has a false return address of operations@bbb.org and a phishing hyperlink citing a BBB complaint case number, for example, "DOCUMENTS FOR CASE #263621205". These links actually direct access to a subdirectory of the hacked firm’s website where users are asked to download documents related to the complaint. The download is actually an executable file that is believed to be some form of a computer virus.
All recipients are advised that any e-mail from the operations@bbb.org address is not coming from any BBB and should be considered counterfeit. The BBB strongly encourages recipients of any such message to delete the message immediately without clicking on the "DOCUMENTS FOR CASE" links.
The phishing e-mail return address of operations@bbb.org does not exist and is being "spoofed." Spoofing occurs when an e-mail address is altered to appear as if the message originated from a legitimate source. This is a common practice for both spam e-mail and phishing operations. Phishing is a term coined by computer hackers, who use e-mail to fish the Internet hoping to “hook” recipients into giving them logins, passwords and/or other sensitive information. In all these scams, the phisher first impersonates a legitimate company. In a typical scam, the phisher instructs recipients to click on a convenient link to receive or provide information that can then be used by phishers to access the recipient’s sensitive personal or business information.

BBB tips for tax preparation
The following tips from the BBB will help consumers distinguish a trained, reputable tax professional from a fraud:
Avoid enticing tax-related promotions that may not be to their financial advantage.
Quick-refund offers and refund anticipation loans can deceive consumers who do not understand that the money is an advance which is paid back upon receiving of the refund check.
Research quick-refund offers on the BBB’s website or on the IRS website (www.irs.gov) and consider your options; if your refund is denied or less than expected you are still responsible for payment of the loan in full.
Consult helpful organizations such as your public library or local government office for the names of groups which offer tax preparation assistance at low costs or for free.
Carefully review the paperwork and all disclosures for refund anticipation loans.

Report says hackers can breach your Windows Vista
According to a report by ITWire, "Microsoft's new operating system Windows Vista
is too smart for its own good. A blogger has found that Vista's speech recognition
system is good enough for hackers to issue security breaching commands using
malicious sound files on rogue websites."
The report says that in typical Microsoft fashion, "Microsoft responded by pointing out that a computer would
have to be equipped with speakers and have a microphone attached. In addition
speech recognition would need to be enabled." The problem with this logic is that
most everyone who owns a computer these days does have a microphone and speakers in working order.
Those customers who choose to purchase or continue using Windows Vista need to remember one thing:
Your security and your computer are in Microsoft's hands.
Kentucky dam flood maps to be released Monday
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has decided to release on Monday maps showing the
extent of flooding along the Cumberland River should the Wolf Creek Dam at Lake
Cumberland fail, reports Courier-Journal of Louisville.
The corps is shoring up the dam with grout and is preparing to put in a new concrete wall -- one that will run 3,900 feet across the dam's earthen span, 3 to 4 feet wide, and 275 feet down into a nonporous layer of limestone bedrock.

A Kentucky dam break could be disastrous
Officials are worried that a dam break could cause major, catastrophic flooding in both states of Kentucky and Tennessee. The U-S Army Corps of Engineers have been called in order to take emergency action.
The feds began lowering the water level on Kentucky's Lake Cumberland in hopes of reducing pressure on the weak 240-foot-high dam. A break in the dam would flood cities downstream, possibly killing several people and causing countless billions of dollars in damage to homes and businesses. Some officials have said that the flooding from such a disaster could reach as far as Nashville. (23 June 07)
