Budget Committee asked about operating illegally
At the Benton County Budget Committee meeting held Tuesday evening (11/9), County Executive and Mayor Jimmy Thornton was asked by Joe Kyle of Camden after the meeting why the Budget Committee was still using rules that had already been deemed illegal. Mr. Thornton seemed to be surprised at the question.
Thornton was then reminded that he agreed that he did not have the authority to change the rules, however, Thornton then responded by saying that he did not agree to anything.
Mureleane Steinbuck, chairperson, was then asked why she continued to use illegal rules of order. Steinbuck responded by stating that she did not wish to argue.
Thornton stated that the question should be asked of John Whitworth, the County Attorney, because Whitworth has more money than Thornton does.
Vivian Mahan pointed out to the commissioners at last month's meeting that they were operating with illegal rules of order. Mahan turned to John Whitworth and asked him to confirm whether what she had read from the law was correct or not. Whitworth confirmed that in fact she was correct.
